Water and Habitat: Prisons – Review of the stoves used in places of detention
The ICRC has been working for more than 30 years to improve the stoves used by both resident and displaced civilian groups, as well as the stoves used in hospitals, places of detention, community centres, schools, etc., with a view to safeguarding the health of people working in kitchens. The ICRC works to improve stoves by: optimizing their efficiency, making cooking conditions more hygienic and finding more sustainable solutions by reducing the impact on the environment. Various models of stoves have been designed and tested in the field by our engineers or by research institutions, with varying degrees of success. This edition offers an overview of the specific issue of the stoves used in places of detention. The aim is to provide information about our experiences in prisons throughout the world and to contribute to the creation of national standards in collaboration with prison authorities.
