Mali: The double benefit of cash-for-work in climate resilience projects

ref. 4834.05
In Mali, the ICRC's cash-for-work project addresses both climate and conflict challenges by rehabilitating key water resources. This case study shows how the initiative involved dredging 4,000 m³ of sand to restore the pond's water capacity, benefiting 1,535 households and 800 displaced individuals. Participants, mostly vulnerable displaced families, received cash for work, providing immediate financial relief while promoting long-term water and food security. The project supports agriculture, livestock, and local economies, offering climate resilience in a region suffering from droughts, sand encroachment, and ongoing conflict. This case highlights the importance of community-driven solutions to address climate vulnerability.
