ICRC Pre-hospital Emergency Care: Guidance for Managing Severe Bleeding

ref. 4855

This publication provides guidance on how to treat patients who are bleeding, and specifically how to treat them in the unique circumstances in which the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works. The guidance is intended for use by trained professionals and for training emergency responders and other responders in bleeding management.

This publication is designed to be used in environments where resources are scarce and/or where travel times to definitive care are long.

In settings where staff do not have the whole range of skills and resources needed to follow the full procedures as indicated, the guidance should be applied to an appropriate clinical level. More fundamental departures from this guidance should be made only in consultation with the ICRC Health Unit at headquarters.
