Health Systems and Needs Assessment in Prisons - Practical Guide and Toolkit

This booklet provides detailed practical guidance and contains a set of tools for carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the health system and health-related needs throughout a penitentiary system. It draws heavily on the ICRC’s field experience of healthcare in detention, and on the experience gained with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in conducting health assessments in prisons around the world. The booklet will be of a great assistance to people and organizations, especially health specialists, health authorities and prison authorities, who seek to develop projects and programmes to strengthen the prison health system and improve the health of people deprived of their liberty.
