Prison maintenance guide

The ICRC has many decades of experience in prisons around the world. This gives the organization a unique understanding of prison visits and improvements to prison conditions. Over the years, there has been increasing cooperation between the ICRC and the authorities. We have seen increased awareness of the systemic causes of certain problems, and of the need to assist prison authorities in finding sustainable solutions. This guide consolidates work undertaken with the prison authorities of several African countries that have recognized the need to establish a maintenance system or to improve their existing system.
